I know this is an issue that has appeared quite a few times. I am having an issue with publishing. I keep getting the same error message. I am trying out a new hosting company called Spaceship and can’t seem to upload any files. Ive attached a screenshot of my settings and a screenshot of the error message. If anyone or Duncan can point me in the right direction. I have tried Filezilla and seem to be able to connect.
The point is not connecting to the server, Sitely did that as well. The point is Sitely is checking whether the folder you pick is what the server is configured with.
What’s inside the two folders in that screenshot?
The two folders are what I added, they’re empty. I have tried those folders with no success, I have also tried \ and also did not connect
In that case the issue is with how the FTP user account has been set up. This is a super common issue because it’s often the default configuration for control panel software.
When you connect via FTP to the server, the server has an initial folder defined in the FTP user profile. If that folder is somewhere below the folder where the domain files live, it won’t be possible to affect the domain contents.
So what you need to do is go to the FTP section of the control panel, create a new FTP user, and when you’re asked to enter a subfolder for the FTP user, ensure the field is empty or clear it out.
Then connect again from Sitely using that new user.
Firstly, thank you, Duncan, for replying speedily and on a Sunday too. I, as well as many users of Sitely, really appreciate your commitment to customer service.
If I just explain what I did, if others have the same issue as it is now working!
My website is eatbeanswebdesign.com. I was trying out a new hosting company as a trial because the cost looked very good.
So, I went into cPanel/FTP accounts and created a new FTP account for this web address. I completed all the sections that were required, which then created an FTP account at eatbeans@eatbeanswebdesign.com. This, in turn, automatically filled in the Directory /home/user/eatbeanswebdesign.com/eatbeans.
Following on from Duncan’s suggestion, I cleared the Directory and left the field blank, which just leaves /home/user/. At first, I thought it was going to work as in Sitley, it did bring up the folder contents from my hosting, but it still showed the same error message.
What I did next was then, instead of leaving the field blank, I had it show as /home/user/eatbeanswebdesign.com, and it worked!!
I hope this goes some way to help others, as I do find it the most frustrating part and don’t look forward to uploading a new website because of it.
Best wishes
Simon
I tried your method but still getting the same error message. It’s so frustrating. I don’t know what else to do.
The only way I could resolve this was to chat with hostgator.com and they fixed it all up for me. Phew.
