I’m trying to add a section which was built over a period of time from a previous website, combining an old website with a new one. The section shows in the left hand Pages pane (De Walden Press) as being live but it won’t show in the menu bar. I’ve tried going through the documentation but must be missing something.
I’m attaching a screenshot.
I’m also unable to change the menu style to the hamburger type on the mobile device view. It just adds the hamburger as an extra menu, it doesn’t remove the old one.
For the pages that don’t appear in your menu, have you enabled the “auto-add pages” option in the menu’s Style tab? Once that’s done, you should be able to click the little eye icon to show or hide the pages you want to appear or disappear from your menu.
Regarding the mobile layout, this doesn’t happen automatically. You’ll need to create two separate menus — one for desktop and one for mobile — and hide the unnecessary one on each device to avoid having both appear. Here’s how to do it:
• Finalize your menu.
• Copy and paste it to have two identical menus.
• Rename the two menus in the Layers panel, for example “Desktop Menu” and “Mobile Menu”.
• On the desktop layout, select the mobile menu, go to the “Arrange” tab and click “Show in this device” to deselect it. This way, the mobile menu won’t appear on the desktop version.
• On the mobile layout, do the same for the desktop menu so that it doesn’t appear on your mobile site.
• Finally, change the style of your mobile menu to display as a Hamburger menu.
You can also choose to replace the mobile menu with a button that opens a Lightbox popup — the effect is quite nice
Thanks so much for your reply, I will try your suggestions asap. I made the rest of the site a couple of years ago with the help of a great guy who is no longer with us, and have been striving ever since to add the other site to this one.
Sorry; a bit off-topic, but can I just say, at the risk of being an utter sycophant, I had a bit of a hunt and found your existing website.Your books are really lovely. I’m a book designer – but of usual-sized books. I love quirky, private press books. There is a man lives near me who used to be a book binder for a renowned private press over this side of the pond. His house is a real treat, full of the most beautiful things he’s made over the years. Have you stopped making the books now and sticking to painting?
I’ve tried the first part for adding a page to the menu. The little eye icon will not change when I click on it to make it visible. The page I’m trying to add to the menu is a Contact form.
Thank you Sprout for those kind words, the books were my life for many years, but had to give up making them for various reasons. So now I’m painting and printmaking (now in my late 70s). You can imagine I’m not a natural website builder! As a book designer you might like to check out the Alcuin Society, they run a book design awards competition (for Canada), but worth looking at their winners.
Go to your form page, and in the “Page” tab on the right, look for the “Exclude From Menus” option. Make sure it’s unchecked. If it’s checked, the page won’t be able to appear in the menu.
I’ve tried your suggestion, it worked for the Contact form and that is now added to the menus on all devices and pages. But it hasn’t worked for the section De Walden Press, which consists of an Index page, called De Walden Press, an About page and 14 pages for the 14 books. I’ve ticked the Auto add to menu and made sure the Exclude from menus isn’t checked and it still won’t work. Maybe it’s because it’s a section and not just a page?
Apologies, I’ve gone back to the documentation and seen the information on adding a section, which I’ll now work through, and stop bothering you. Many thanks for your help.
Normally, if you disable the “Exclude from menu” option on at least one page inside the “De Walden Press” section, you should see the section name appear in the menu. But if all the pages in that section are excluded, the menu won’t display the section at all.
You can also manually add a menu item by clicking the “+” button.
And you can even replace the menu with several independent buttons — that’s what I’ve always done myself. I’ve never used Sitely’s built-in menu system because using custom buttons allows for much more flexibility.
Thanks, I’ll have another go at it when my mind is fresher. I wondered about using a button instead of including it on the menu, because once I’ve got the De Walden Press information on this site I will be deleting the old site and pointing that domain name to this new site. People looking for De Walden Press probably won’t be interested in paintings, a button would attract their attention and take them straight to what they’re looking for. I do appreciate the help from this community, and the flexibility of Sitely.
