Erratic behaviour of layout interface

Hello - I am very excited about the idea of Sitely, been waiting for something like this. Just bought it yesterday.

So - to learn a bit I recreated an existing 2-page website I had made previously in WP.

This went well for a while, then when I tried to extend the page length, I created space, grabbed the parts that needed to move down by just dragging over it all, moved it down, added a new box where I needed it. It looked fine in the layout window.
When I switched to Preview in Chrome, the page was a total train wreck, all the boxes and images had been piled into the upper half of the page all overlapping and jumbled. Still looked fine in layout.
I “command-z” a couple of times and it all went back to how it was supposed to be. I restarted Sitely just in case.

Went OK for a while then…

I had finished the front page and was really happy with the result, looked much better than the original WP page.

Then I started on the 2nd page, and I needed a couple of the groups on page 1 to appear on page 2, so I toggled them to “all pages.” Train wreck again.
My header, which was already toggled and had been working fine on both pages, literally vanished with all content, gone from layout, gone from the layer list.
One group I had just toglled, did appear on page 2, the other just didn’t.
Page 1 again came apart, gaps appeared between boxes, objects and images moved around in no obvious logical order.

I did “command-z” a few times, and some things went back to normal, but the header never reappeared.

I started rebuilding the header… I copied a logo image from further down the page, and tried to resize it to fit the header area - it shrank but it immediately jumped back onto the image I had copied it from, and would not let me select it in layout - I was able to select it via the layer list though. When I dragged it off the other image, it left another small copy behind, whic did not appear in the layer list.
So I put the small copied logo onto the header area, and it immediately took on the settings of the vanished copy of the logo - I didn’t need to do any setting of animation, it just adopted the settings from somewhere.

So now, 24 hours later, I re-open the site. I am trying to rebuild the header once again. The logo is still there and doing what it should somehow. I add a box, that’s ok so far. I add a text box for a link, which I type into, and as soon as I move it along the header area to adjust position, it vanishes from layout and the layer list. “Command-z” has no effect.

I also note that if I try to resize the logo in the header, it will vanish, but re-appear with command-z. There are also things in the layer list which I don’t recognize - I’ve been labelling layers with identifiable names and these ae just generic like “Box 22” etc. When I click on them, they jump to a page position but there is nothing selected, all visible objects are known to me, and there’s nothing hidden behind them.

So while I really love the idea of Sitely, my question is: is this sort of app behaviour typical? I’m concerned now that it will just randomly mangle my work, and lose a lot of time. Not an acceptable situation for me.

Welcome onboard @culturalproduct

Sorry to hear your experience with Sitely.
I can say now and again I will have an issue with Sitely, and in most part it comes down to human-error, but overall it works as expected.

From what I have read you have been having issues all over the place.
Have you been using Layout Blocks or Groups? There will be times when you copy and paste and what you have done it too will remain in the same position until you move it. But be aware if it was in a Group or a Layout Block it might be still in that which will cause some of the things you have mentioned.

As you have mentioned Sitely is new to you, and like all of use, we went through some teething-issues in the beginning as Sitely works very different to all the web development platforms out there…

If you do believe you are experiencing some really strange and unpredictable issues, it is a good idea to get hold of @duncan at feedback@sitely.app, explaining the situation, possible with a screenvideo as well, plus what macOS you are using.

Thanks for taking time to reply.

So far I’ve just Grouped things. It is working most of the time. I did manage to finish the site again, and it worked fine once done. I exported to files and FTP transferred them, and it works fine!

I have a lot of experience with Wordpress, Wix, SiteOrigin, CSS, so I’m really thorough about settings. Sitely looks like a perfect solution for simple sites though. Its reassuring that you have found it works!

Hi @culturalproduct, welcome.

What you describe doesn’t sound like Sitely at all. We strive to make the software as worry free and smooth as possible, clearly in your case something wrong happened.

While I don’t doubt what you saw was happening, and I’m sure “train wreck” is accurate, but it’s not really descriptive or detailed enough of what might have been going on. What I suggest doing is using the “Send this document as feedback” from the help menu, or even better a step by step list on how to reproduce that issue. We’re generally very fast about solving reproducible issues.

We have many customers with websites that range from a few to several hundred pages, a few megabytes to tens and even hundreds of gigabytes in size. It works for them (and for our ~300 page website).

You might decide that Sitely is not for you, but if you give us a chance we will work on solving the issues.

Beginner here, (with decades WYSIWYG 2d-3d experience) all untraceable problems cleared up only after doing two simple things:

Dev’s Device Layout option to (PC & Landscape) 960 Pixels, and keeping all others at Automatically Scaled!

(This was on a 1920 Ă— 1080 Display, and dev zooming was used a lot before realizing importance of Automatically Scaled on other options).

Also Critical Action: Sitely> Menu> Preferences> Remove All (Publishing Cashes)

Thanks to all community pointers for other things, these two finally finalized all my very particular, 30 days of mysterious problems!
