Future Mac OS support

I know that this is not a question that can/will be easily answered - and also has been asked differently before, but it really would be helpful to know, which mac os will be still supported in future Sitely versions, e.g. how long Mojave will be supported, which I still use because of some 32-bit apps which are important to me.
The other problem is that my Mac can run only run Monterey natively.
Thank you Sitely Team for giving us at least a hint of what the future will bring.

You shouldn’t bet too highly on either Mojave (10.14) or Catalina (10.15) being supported much longer in “current” Apple tools, thus supported in updates. A whole lot of Macs ceased to be supported at the High Sierra (10.13) cliff, and that was a couple years ago. As a Mac developer, my software release notes are already alerting users that those Macs limited to Mojave or Catalina are going to lose support too. Time marches on… and OS versions do too.

I’m not an Apple guy or Sitely developer, so this is just my personal take, but I still keep archived versions of software for customers back to the Power PC - before the App Stores and Mac OS X 10.4 Lion - just in case.

Thanks JB for your reply. I know that time marches on and with new OSes new possibilities open, but Apple more and more closes gates, gets more restricted and as an old guy, knowing Mac OSes since System 6, I feel more and more limited in my personal decisions. I don’t want to buy a new product just because of software restrictions, as long as I can do what I want and need with my “old” stuff.
Anyways, it’s a good idea to keep a running version of a software.

Hello :wave:t2:

Sitely strives to remain compatible with as many versions of macOS as possible, but disables features that are not supported by older systems. This means that even if certain new features won’t be available, you will still be able to use a version of Sitely suited to your current macOS.

However, it’s important to note that, as with all applications, support for older systems eventually becomes limited due to development tool constraints and security requirements. Consequently, in the long term, I believe it’s inevitable that some versions of macOS, like Mojave or Catalina, will lose compatibility with future updates.

For users like you who prefer to stick with an older version of macOS, it will always be possible to keep and use a previous version of Sitely.

Thanks Allan, that sounds reassuring.

The only thing we can offer on this is we don’t have any intention of breaking older macOS support if we absolutely can. While there are developers who will just state their policy of supporting the current version of macOS and one back, we prefer to keep older macOS running (albeit sometimes with hobbled support for the newest features).

When we dropped 10.9-10.13 it was exclusively because it became seriously unpractical for a small team to develop and test with obsolete software development tools and hardware. Apple removed support for those from Xcode so we had to follow.

I agree with @JBTexas, it’s unfortunately likely that Apple will do it again at some point in the future. When and what they’ll drop is anybody’s guess. My guess is the next ones will be 10.14 and 10.15, the last of the 10.x era. If that’s with macOS 16 in late 2025, it will drop support for Macs that are at that point 12 years old. Since I still own a Mac that old (2013 21" iMac), and I know how bad it runs, it kind of seems fair, despite newer Macs having a pretty steep price tag.

Thanks Duncan. You saying that you don’t intend to drop old OSes unless you “have to” is all I wanted to hear. And I am fully aware of some drawbacks (speed, newest features not working etc.) of old macs, just cannot afford a newer one right now.
