The publish location is saved in the project file and protected by the Master Password that you set. There is no separate preference files for that.
Hi Duncan thanks,
If that is the case why would I lose the Publish settings after dragging the file over to the new machine?
Well all I can say for certain is the settings are not lost because of the project file being moved to a different machine. What happens next I don’t know. Maybe you tried to open the publish settings, were asked about the master password and clicked delete?
I have never set a master password.
I’m trying to update my website on a new Mac and have just had the same publishing problem. I’m now required to put in the Master Password which I did not set on the previous machine. I have now gone to 'Site Settings>Master Password on Sitely and typed a new password, confirmed it, and selected RESET. It now informs me that all previous publishing settings will be deleted etc - and this cannot be undone. So I then went to my old Mac to see what the publishing settings were and this advises me that because Sparkle is now Sitely I can only access if I have a Master Password! Going back to Sitely, I cannot see the details of any publishing settings!
I’d like some help please. Thanks.
I have had to do this many times over the years. I saved each setting as a screenshot, along with the passwords, and put that in a locked Note. Once you figure out the issue here, I highly recommend doing something similar.
This sounds a very good idea and I will do it when this is sorted. But now I’d like to know how can I see my current website settings which is published? I’m working on an update of the current website but Sitely won’t let me publish without a Password and when I give that password it will delete the current settings. On my old Mac with Sparkle, the publishing settings section were on the top menu and could be seen. I would just like to copy those settings because they are working for my published site. But where are they on Sitely?
It seems a common issue is people don’t remember being asked for a master password, or setting it. That’s totally part of the publishing setup workflow, and has been since Sparkle 4.0 (including migrating previous publish settings).
The “master password” encrypts settings that would be inconvenient to share when sharing the project file, so the publishing settings and the password protection settings currently.
The master password is not something that’s set by Sitely or ever sent to our servers, so if you don’t recall it it can only be cleared, losing the publish settings.
If you still have access to the old Mac you can use the “Keychain access” system application to look for the password in the keychain, where Sparkle/Sitely stores it. You need to search for “sparkle-data” and it will be there.
Regarding “migrating previous publish settings”. If I start a new project from scratch, there is a way to migrate settings from another project that has the publishing info set? Somehow I am not aware of how to do this, I tried searching the documentation and no results. Where do I find how to do that.
Sorry no that was referring to Sparkle v3 or v2 settings for the same project.
I read so much about a master password, but I really don’t recall ever having set one, nor having to use it. Is it because I only publish externally via Transmit? Do we need a master password for publishing directly from Sitely only? One of my websites is password protected, but still no “master password” was/is needed/found.
I tried to find “sparkle-data” in my keychain, but there was none.
Can somebody please shed some light, because now I feel uneasy, insecure.
Thanks.
The master password encrypts sensitive information in your project, so publish settings (because they contain your FTP password), and user accounts (because they contain passwords of your users).
This means export to disk settings are not stored in the encrypted area of the project and don’t need a master password.
It’s unfortunately not surprising that some of our customers don’t recall ever being asked to set a master password, but it’s exactly what happens. As mentioned the encryption has been there for a while, and you only need to create a new project and configure publishing on it to see that you’re going to be asked for a master password.
That said there is also the option of not having a master password, by clicking the “Don’t set a password in this project” button, and presumably that’s what you have on your project with password protection.
Arguably the user interface contains too much text, and people really resist reading. But what it says is I think is pretty clear.
Thank you Duncan for your (as usual) clear and quick answer. The only thing: I was checking my project with password protection but couldn’t find the “Don’t set a password in this project” button. Does it mean that I put a MP?
In the Master Password section I would be able to change my MP. When would I be asked to enter the “master password” (if I had set one)?
Thanks again.
In the master password section the “Don’t set…” button is not enabled if you already have set the project to not have a password. That’s where you change the password if you already have one, or set it if you don’t.
