I’ve noted a few old (2020) topics on this subject, asking how to resize the (fairly large) action overlay icons on images and in slideshows. I’ve not seen much discussion of this since – have I overlooked some clever hack how to make them smaller?

No, unfortunately, there’s still no way to adjust the size of the icons yet.
